Characteristics

Bark: brownish grey, smooth, peeling in strips to reveal a rusty-coloured underbark. Leaves: drooping, opposite, with an occasional third leaf, lanceolate to elliptic, 3.5-9 x 2-5 cm, leathery, dark shiny green, hairless except for distinct hair-tuft domatia on the undersurface; apex and base tapering; margin wavy; petiole 1-10 mm long, purplish; stipules triangular, eventually falling. Flowers: cream with pink or purple markings in the throat, corolla tube funnel-shaped, up to 10 cm long and 8 cm in diameter, solitary Fruit: round, hard, up to 6.5 cm in diameter, shiny green with pale green speckles, green, becoming dark brown, crowned with a scar left by the fallen calyx (taking 2 years to mature).
