Itchgrass (en)

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Rottboellia

Characteristics

Culms to 3 m high, erect, often with prop roots, branching from upper nodes; nodes glabrous. Leaves: ligule a short ciliate membrane c. 1.5 mm long; blade to 55 cm long, 10–30 mm wide; sheath glabrous or with tubercular based hairs. Inflorescences a terminal or axillary spike-like raceme exserted from or partially enclosed by subtending leaf sheath, solitary; racemes to 15 cm long, comprised of 12–14 fertile spikelet pairs in segments joined end to end (several spikelets, 5 or 6, reduced at apex and sterile), the raceme fragile and disarticulating between segments. Spikelet pairs comprised of a sessile and pedicelled spikelet on a thick internode excavated on one side to form a cavity, internodes 6–7.5 mm long, 2.5–3.25 mm wide, longer than pedicels, glabrous; pedicels fused to internode along one margin. Sessile spikelet embedded into cavity of rachis to form a cylindrical joint/segment, 3.5–6 mm long, c. 2 mm wide, with lower glume prominent; lower glume same length as spikelet, ovate to oblong, shallowly rounded on back, notched, acuminate, obtuse or truncate, veinless or finely many-veined, 2-keeled, obscurely winged at apex, thickly coriaceous becoming indurated with maturity, glabrous; upper glume broadly oblong or ovate, boat-shaped, deeply keeled with sides enfolding florets, more or less equal to lower glume, acute, thickly coriaceous becoming indurated, faintly 15-veined, glabrous, immersed in cavity; florets 2, lower floret usually male, or sterile, upper floret bisexual; lower lemma, ovate, chartaceous; lower palea narrowly elliptic or oblong, hyaline; upper lemma broadly oblong-ovate, gibbous and boatshaped, as long as upper glume, chartaceous; upper palea narrowly elliptic, slightly shorter than lemma, chartaceous; anthers c. 1.5 mm long. Pedicellate spikelets slightly shorter than sessile spikelet; lower glume c. 3–5.5 mm long, herbaceous 12–18-veined; upper glume ⅔ as long as lower, chartaceous; florets reduced to hyaline lemmas and paleas, sterile or male.
More
Coarse annual. Culms stout, 1–3 m tall, 5–10 mm in diam., supported below by stilt roots, branched in upper part. Leaf sheaths tuberculate-hispid with stiff irritant hairs or sometimes glabrescent; leaf blades linear-lanceolate, 20–50 × 0.5–2.5 cm, glabrous or adaxial surface hispidulous, very scabrid along margins, midrib broad, white, apex acuminate; ligule a ciliate membrane, ca. 1 mm. Racemes yellow and green, 6–15 × 0.25–0.4 cm, stiff, terminating in a green tail of reduced spikelets; rachis internodes 4–6 mm, rounded on back, slightly longer than adjacent pedicel. Sessile spikelet pale yellow, 5–6 mm; lower glume ovate, minutely scaberulous on back, keeled only toward entire or very minutely 2–3-toothed apex; lower lemma as long as upper lemma. Pedicelled spikelet green, variable, 3–5 mm, narrowly ovate, herbaceous. Fl. and fr. Jul–Oct.
Annual, often robust, 0.3-3.0 m high; stilt roots usually present; basal sheaths with stiff irritating hairs. Leaf blade 600 x 10-30 mm; ligule a fringed membrane. Inflorescence a solitary, cylindrical raceme; internodes squatly clavate, fused to adjacent pedicel; spikelets sunken, in pairs: one sessile, the other pedicelled but appearing sessile due to almost complete fusion of pedicel with rachis. Sessile spikelet 4-7 mm long, awnless; glumes ± equal. Florets 2; lower floret male; upper floret bisexual; anther 1.0-2.0 mm long. Pedicelled spikelet 3-5 mm long, hardly discernible as internodes fused to adjacent pedicels. Flowering time Dec.-June.
Tall annual supported below by stilt roots, the basal-sheaths painfully hispid; culms 30 cm. to 3 m. high.. Leaf-blades broadly linear, up to 45 cm. long, 2 cm. wide.. Raceme 3–15 cm. long, glabrous, terminating in a tail of reduced spikelets, gathered into a spathate false panicle.. Sessile spikelet oblong-elliptic, pallid; lower glume 3.5–5 mm. long; upper glume with the keel narrowly winged towards the tip.. Pedicelled spikelet narrowly ovate, 3–5 mm. long, herbaceous, green; pedicel shorter than the internode.. Fig. 203.
A grass. It is a robust annual plant. It is erect and can be 3 m high. The stems are stiff and have few branches. There are lumpy bristles near the base. There can be stilt roots. The leaves are flat and 1.8 cm wide. They taper to a long fine point. There are sharp spiny hairs along the edges. The spike is simple, straight and 15 cm long. The spikelets are pressed closely.
Robust annual 300-3000 mm high; stilt roots usually present; basal sheaths with stiff irritating hairs. Leaf blade 600 x 10-30 mm. Inflorescence a cylindrical raceme, spikelets sunken. Sessile spikelet 4-7 mm long, awnless; palea well developed; anther 1-2 mm long. Pedicelled spikelet 3-5 mm long, hardly discernible as internodes fused to adjacent pedicels.
Annual (often robust), up to 3 m high. Leaf blades up to 600 mm long, 10-30 mm wide. Spikelets (sessile and pedicellate) 4-7 mm long. Racemes cylindrical, spikelets sunken; basal sheaths with stiff irritating hairs.
Sessile spikelet oblong-elliptic, pallid; callus circular with a prominent central peg; inferior glume 3.5–5 mm long; superior glume boat-shaped with keel narrowly winged above, fitting into the concave internode.
Pedicelled spikelet 3–5 mm long, narrowly ovate, herbaceous, green; pedicel shorter than the internode, the two fused throughout.
Racemes 3–15 cm long, cylindrical, glabrous, terminating in a tail of reduced spikelets, gathered into a spathate false panicle.
Leaf sheaths, especially the lower, painfully hispid; leaf laminas up to 45 cm × 20 mm, broadly linear.
Tall annual up to 400 cm high, supported below by stilt roots.
