Characteristics

Perennial lianes; latex white. Roots fibrous. Leaves petiolate; lamina coriaceous or herbaceous, entire or lobed, glabrous or with variable indumentum; colleters present. Inflorescence umbelliform. Corolla rotate, subrotate, campanulate or urceolate; tube very short to cylindrical; lobes free at tips, valvate. Annular corona absent; corolline corona present or absent; gynostegial corona staminal and composed of 5 lobes adnate to staminal column, lacking conspicuous basal hump, or absent. Stamens connate into gynostegium, markedly capitate or not. Anthers 2-locular, with terminal appendage; pollen in linear tetrads; pollinaria with 2, semi-erect to horizontal, globose, subglobose or oblong pollinia without pellucid mouth; corpusculum narrowly oblong, 5 or more times as long as wide; caudicles not winged, geniculate. Style head conical, papillose, with 5 distinct ridges running down towards corpuscula. Follicles fusiform to ovoid. Seeds flattened, ovate, comose at micropylar end, or ecomose.
