Characteristics

Branchlets inconspicuously pubescent, becoming glabrous (rarely glabrous). Bark light grey, smooth, becoming finely scaly, yellowish to grey. Leaves with petiole 2-10 mm long; blade oblong to linear-lanceolate or ovate-oblong, 2.5-5.5(-9) by 0.5-2.5 cm, coriaceous, apex obtuse or rounded, base pointed, upper surface glabrous, lower surface glabrous or slightly hairy. Inflorescences terminal or axillary racemes up to 15 cm long. Flowers with pedicel 10-18 mm long, pubescent; bracts and bracteoles minute, lanceolate, deciduous; posterior and anterior sepals 3-6 by 2.5-5 mm, lateral 2.7-9 mm long and 8-9.5 mm wide; upper two petals obovate, 5-6 mm by 2.5-4 mm, stamens with filaments fused into split sheath 6-7 mm long, free part 4 mm long; style 8-10 mm long, stigma 1.5-2 mm long, ovule pendulous. Fruit smooth and rugulose 5-7 cm long, notched at base on the side of the aborted carpel, the wing variable, ventral margin nearly straight or curved, gradually or abruptly narrowed with numerous, curved, parallel, forking nerves. Seed 8 by 6 mm.
More
Small tree, up to 6 m high. Young stems usually densely pubescent. Leaves broadly oblong to narrowly elliptic, 10-50 x 5-18 mm. Fruit 30-50 x 8-20 mm with an oblong or elliptic, somewhat obliquely curved wing. Nut 8-10 mm in diameter, rugulose or smooth. Flowers pink, purple and white.
Flowers pink or purple sometimes variegated with white, sweet-scented, pedicels up to 14 mm. long, pubescent, in terminal or lateral racemes, 3–5 cm. long, often borne on short shoots which become spiny, with minute, deciduous bracts and bracteoles and pubescent rhachis.
Leaves petiolate; lamina 1–5 x 0.5–1.8 cm., very variable in size and shape, from broadly oblong to very narrowly elliptic, usually minutely pubescent when young, soon becoming glabrous; petiole up to 5 mm. long.
Fruit 3–5 x 0.8–2 cm., with an oblong or elliptic somewhat obliquely curved wing, sometimes with a second rudimentary wing. Nut containing the seed 8–10 mm. in diam., rugulose or smooth.
Posterior sepal up to 5 x 4 mm. ovate-acuminate, with ciliate margins; wing sepals 5–11 x 4–9 mm., suborbicular, nearly glabrous; anterior sepals up to 5 x 4.5 mm., broadly ovate.
Upper petals up to 7.5 x 3.5 mm., narrowly elliptic, ciliate at the base; carina up to 10 mm. long with a small lobed appendage about 1 mm. long near the apex.
Small tree up to about 6 m. or shrub, sometimes spiny; stems usually pubescent at first, becoming glabrous.
Staminal sheath ciliate on the upper margin.
