Rhizome 2–4 mm diam., smooth, bearing spreading lanceolate scales with long-ciliate margins. Frond of 1–4 tiers of opposite primary branches which in turn are divided 1–3 times; leaflets of first fork pinnately lobed; dormant buds obvious; rachis glabrous above, glabrous below except for very occasional pale brown scales. Stipe 6–75 (–100) cm long, initially scaly, glabrescent, smooth, or a few scales persistent basally. Ultimate segments linear, entire, 7–37 mm long, 1.5–3.5 mm wide, angled at 75–90° to axis, glabrous above and below; undersurface pale green to slightly glaucous. Sori of 3–6 sporangia, lacking paraphyses, half-way between margin and midrib; sporangia yellow to pale brown, 0.3–0.4 mm diam.
Common in rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest, often forming dense thickets in open situations and disturbed sites, along streams and on damp banks.
