Sticherus C.Presl

Umbrella fern (en)

Genus

Pteridophytes > Gleicheniales > Gleicheniaceae

Characteristics

Rhizome long-creeping, scaly but glabrescent; scales lanceolate; scale margins ciliate to fimbriate at least near apex; roots with very narrow linear cells. Fronds complex, consisting of up to 4 tiers of opposite, usually flabellate, primary branches with dormant vegetative buds between them. Stipes scattered along rhizome; rachis bearing brown scales and branched to stellate hairs, often glabrous on upper side. Lower primary branches rarely dividing; penultimate segments divided almost to midrib; ultimate segments alternate or occasionally opposite, linear, entire or toothed, glabrous above, usually with scales and branched hairs on undersurface, green to glaucous; venation open, dichotomous. Sori of 2–8 large sporangia, arranged in 2 rows along ultimate segments, half-way between midrib and margin on distal branches of veins, exindusiate; sporangia occasionally intermixed with paraphyses. Spores monolete, ellipsoidal; surface rugulose, usually perforate.
More
Rhizomes creeping, covered with scales. Fronds distant, erect; lamina often repeatedly pseudodichotomously divided, without lateral pinnules at dichotomies, upper axes pinnulelike with rows of lobes along each side; lamina gray-green or glaucous abaxially; veins once forked. Sori orbicular, exindusiate, in 1 line on each side of costule; sporangia 4 or 5(or 6), sessile; spores 2-sided or reniform, monolete.
