Rhizome long-creeping, 3–4 mm diam., with pale brown to reddish brown ciliate scales. Frond of 1–4 tiers of opposite primary branches which, in turn, are divided 1–3 times; ultimate divisions lanceolate to broadly lanceolate or elliptic; leaflets of first fork simple or occasionally lobed; dormant buds obvious. Stipe 7–90 cm long, glabrous except for basal scales; rachis with brown to orange-brown ciliate scales, glabrescent. Ultimate segments 13–27 (–45) mm long, 2–3 mm wide, entire or obscurely crenate distally, at an angle of 50º–65º (–75º) to axis, glabrous above, with white to pale brown simple and branched hairs along veins below. Sori of (2–) 3–5 (–6) sporangia, lacking paraphyses, half-way between midrib and margin; sporangia brown to yellow-brown, c. 0.4 mm diam.
Occurs in wet forests from sea-level to 800 m in moist clay soils along streams and rivers, around waterfalls and along seepage lines on sheltered rock faces. Also frequent in disturbed sites like road cuttings and along tracks.
