Spikelets 2–6-flowered, the upper ± reduced; callus linear, 2 mm. long, densely clad in short stiff bristles; glumes unequal, herbaceous-membranous, 3–5-nerved, rounded on the back; lemmas much exceeding the glumes, herbaceous, becoming hardened, prominently 7-nerved, rounded on the back, shortly 2-toothed or almost entire, awned from the back just below the tip; awn flexuous, very fine, becoming coiled and entangled with the awns from other lemmas.
Lemmas much exceeding the glumes, distinctly 7-nerved, expanded lanceolate to lanceolate-elliptic or narrowly elliptic, herbaceous at first, later chartaceous, apex shortly bilobed or more rarely entire, awned from the back beneath the sinus of the lobes; awn rather long, increasingly slender towards the apex, scaberulous, twisted, becoming entangled with the awns from the other florets.
Glumes 2, subequal, persistent, apex subacute to acute, membranous, with hyaline margins; the inferior slightly smaller than the superior, 3-nerved; the superior 5-nerved, often with transverse veinlets.
Caryopsis linear-oblong in outline, almost terete, dorsally with a long terminal groove, the apex crowned with the persistent base of the style; embryo small; hilum minute, basal.
Ovary glabrous, oblong in outline; styles distinct; stigmas plumose, laterally exserted.
Paleas shorter than the lemmas, 2-keeled, linear, with thin hyaline margins.
Stamens 3; filaments broadened towards the base; anthers linear-oblong.
Lodicules 2, minute, cuneate-truncate, fleshy, glabrous.
Inflorescence an open somewhat secund panicle.
Perennial grasses with flaccid leaves.
Ligule a short membrane.
