Characteristics

Annuals, caespitose, bisexual. Leaves: ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence a false spike, with spikelets on contracted axes and clusters reduced to spikelet pairs, composed of both bisexual and sterile spikelets, with sterile spikelets at tip of rachis. Bisexual spikelets sessile, dorsiventrally compressed, disarticulating above glumes, with 1 bisexual floret; rachilla prolonged beyond bisexual floret and bearing an incomplete floret. Bisexual floret: glumes ±equal, displaced, subulate, awn-like, 1 or 3-nerved. Callus long, pointed, with only a few marginal spicules. Bisexual floret: lemma apically 1-awned, dorsally rounded, hardened at maturity, 3–5-nerved; stamens 3; ovary hairy. Caryopsis: hilum long-linear.
