Genus

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Bignoniaceae

Characteristics

Erect or scrambling shrubs or small trees. No gland fields at the nodes. Leaves 1-pinnate, sometimes 1-jugate, or more rarely simple; leaf or leaflets incised or serrate, densely microscopically glandular-punctate and with hairy domatia underneath. Pedicel with minute bracteoles. Flowers in terminal racemes or more often raceme-like thyrses, yellow, orangish or scarlet. Calyx cupular or campanulate, with 5, often apiculate deltoid lobes, glands scattered. Corolla tubular, with a short basal tube, funnel-shaped, ± straight or ± curved, widened to the mouth, lobes almost equal to unequal, imbricate in bud, minutely ciliate. Stamens 4, didyna-mous, exserted or included; anther-cells divergent, often finally standing out trans-versally, free or partly connate, sometimes hairy; 5th rudimentary. Disk cupular-pulvinate to shallowly cup-shaped. Ovary narrow cylindric or oblong, compressed, lepidote; ovules 2-4-seriate in each cell. Capsule linear, ± compressed parallel to septum; valves smooth. Seeds hyaline-winged all round, insertion punctiform.
More
Erect to scandent shrubs or small trees. Leaves opposite (or in whorls of 3), imparipinnate, rarely simple; tendrils absent; leaflets toothed or serrate, glandular-punctate below. Inflorescences terminal racemes, raceme-like thyrses or panicles. Flowers pedicillate, subtended by a tiny bracteole at base of pedicel. Calyx cupular, shallowly 5-lobed, the lobes equal. Corolla yellow, orange or scarlet, funnel-shaped with short tube widening into longer throat, ± straight or curved, ± 2-lipped; lobes equal or unequal, imbricate in bud. Stamens 4, in 2 pairs of unequal length (didynamous), exerted from or included in corolla tube; staminode present; anther locules widely diverging, sometimes pubescent. Ovary with small scales, with 2–4 rows of ovules in each locule. Fruit a loculicidal capsule, linear-oblong, compressed. Seeds many, discoid, flat, surrounded by a hyaline wing that is broadest at each end.
Shrubs or small trees. Leaves simple, 3-foliolate or imparipinnately com-pound, the leaflets serrate. Inflorescence a terminal raceme or racemose panicle. Flowers with the calyx cupular, with 5 shallow, often apiculate, deltoid lobes, corolla yellow or orangish, tubular-campanulate to narrowly tubular-infundib-uliform, glabrous outside; stamens exserted or included, the anthers variously divergent, glabrous or pilose; pollen grains single, oblong, 3-colpate, the exine microreticulate; ovary narrowly cylindric, lepidote, the ovules 2-seriate in each locule; disc cupular-pulvinate. Fruit a linear capsule, somewhat compressed parallel to the septum but dehiscing perpendicularly to it, the valves smooth, more or less glabrous; seeds thin, bialate, the wings hyaline-membranaceous, sharply demarcated from the seed body.
