Perennials, rhizomatous or caespitose, erect, rigid, glaucous, bisexual. Leaves: ligule an eciliate membrane. Inflorescence a spike, with spikelets appressed or spreading; rachis disarticulating and fragile or not disarticulating, flattened on side facing spikelets, smooth or scabrous on lateral angles. Spikelets solitary, sessile to subsessile, laterally compressed, falling with glumes, with 2–11 bisexual florets; rachilla extension with sterile florets. Glumes ±equal, shorter than spikelet, awnless, hardened at maturity, dorsally rounded, 4–12-nerved. Callus short, pointed, glabrous. Bisexual florets: lemma blunt, awnless, keeled only toward apex, 5-nerved; stamens 3; ovary hairy. Hilum long-linear.
