Characteristics

Plants caespitose. Culms 96–120 cm high. Leaves with auricles 1.5–1.75 mm long; basal sheath margins connate; ligule c. 0.75 mm long, truncate, membranous to chartaceous; blade to 50 cm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, involute, adaxially commonly scabrous or pilose or occasionally scabrous and pilose, with margins scabrous. Spike 10–40 cm long, contracted, with 11 or 12 shortly spreading spikelets imbricate on rachis; peduncle 34.5–38 cm long, glabrous; rachis tough and persistent, with lateral angles scabrous. Spikelets 15–21 mm long, with 8–10 bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume oblong, 8.5 mm long, c. 2.5 mm wide, carnose to cartilaginous, dorsally flattened, 8-nerved. Bisexual florets: lemma narrowly ovate, 10–10.5 mm long, obtuse; anthers 6 mm long.
