Annual or perennial herbs, usually scapose. Leaves radical, less often cauline and alternate. Capitula homogamous, few to many in terminal lax panicles; phyllaries 2–3-seriate; receptacle naked, alveolate. Florets pubescent outside, ligules yellow often becoming greenish when dry, but the inner ones usually much shorter and often brownish; anthers sagittate; style branches short and obtuse, with short collecting hairs. Capitula pedunculate; involucral bracts ± biseriate; inner bracts hardened, strongly convex and erect at maturity. Florets: ligule yellow or purplish brown. Achenes dimorphic, not compressed, unbeaked. Pappus dimorphic, of bristles and scales, persistent; bristles and scales scabridulous, sometimes of 2 types within pappus.
