Characteristics

Tuber globular, surrounded by papery tunics; above-ground parts ephemeral. Leaves 1-4, basal and cauline, terete or slightly grooved; base sheathing, dilated. Inflorescence a terminal, loose or compact cyme or a solitary flower. Flowers actinomorphic. Perianth tubular; lobes 6, equal, woolly at least in part, or ciliate. Stamens 6; filaments expanded, fleshy, inserted at top of perianth tube, produced beyond anther attachment as an erect appendage or with minute lateral points; anthers attached near their middle on face of filament; locules free below attachment, fused and sterile at apex. Ovary inferior or half-inferior; stigma subterminal or terminal; ovules 10-80 per locule. Seeds angular, brown.
