Characteristics

Trees, monoecious. Leaves distichous, pinnately veined to sometimes subtriplinerved; stipules fully amplexicaul, connate. Inflorescences in the leaf-axils, initially enveloped by 2 coriaceous bud-scales, bisexual, involucrate. Staminate flowers peripheral, without perianth, initially covered by the membranaceous expanded margin of the receptacle, this cover tearing at anthesis, leaving a tubular part around the pistillate flower and a fringe-like marginal part; stamens without distinct floral arrangement, straight before anthesis. Pistillate flower 1, central, partly adnate to the receptacle; perianth 4-lobed;ovary adnate to the perianth; stigmas 2, band-shaped, equal. Fruit forming a drupaceous whole with the enlarged fleshy dark purple to red receptacle, crowned with the remnants of the stamens and the marginal part of the receptacle. Seed large, without endosperm; cotyledons equal, thick and fused.
