Characteristics

Plants forming hummocks c. 0.6 m high. Culms scaberulous, sometimes sparsely pilose. Leaves auriculate; sheath hirsute or pilose in lower part; orifice ciliate; blade often flexuose, to 25 cm long, with pseudopetiole 2–3 mm long. Panicles open, sparse, 11.5–13 cm long, 3–4 cm wide including awns; branches to 3 cm long, each terminating in a spikelet. Spikelets 11–13 mm long excluding awns, 2–3.3 mm wide, closely 7-or 8-flowered; pedicel of terminal spikelet on each branch to 14 mm long; other pedicels c. 1.5 mm long. Glumes 7–8 mm long (excluding awns), 2-lobed, 3-awned (from lobes and sinus), cartilaginous, faintly 3-nerved; body mainly glabrous below, ciliate or pilose above; median awn 6–9 mm long; lateral awns 2–4 mm long; awns of upper glume longer than those of lower. Callus blunt, bearded with straight white silky hairs. Basal lemma body (including callus) c. 6 mm long, cartilaginous, 9-nerved, silvery-white villous near base, pilose-ciliate on upper margins; lobes all similar in form, attenuated into long, filiform, straight, spreading or reflexed awns; median awn ±12 mm long; lateral awns ±7 mm long. Palea slightly longer than lemma body, membranous, bearded at base; keels acute; flaps broad with hyaline margins.
