Leaves: sheath glabrous or with simple tubercle-based hairs, ciliate on margins; orifice bearded; auricles absent; blade rigid, straight, to 15 cm long, 0.8 mm wide, pseudopetiolate, glabrous or lower margins ciliate, scabrous or papillose. Panicles loose, 10–21 cm long, 1–3 cm wide; axis and divisions triquetrous, densely scabrid-hispid to pilose; primary branches to 7 cm long. Spikelets 8–9 mm long excluding awns, 6-or 7-flowered; pedicel 1–7 mm long; rachilla internodes c. 1 mm long. Glumes lanceolate, indurated, faintly 3 (sub 5)-nerved, glabrous or with ciliate margins; lower glume body 5–8 mm long, entire, with awn 2–5 mm long; upper glume with body 5–6 mm long, 2-lobed, with awn 3–5 mm long from sinus. Callus 0.5 mm long, bearded except glabrous at tip. Basal lemma body 4.2–4.5 mm long, scaberulous, hirsute in lower third, ciliate on upper margins; midlobe represented by a contorted or recurved or reflexed awn 8–12 mm long; lateral lobes c. 1 mm long, acuminate.
