Characteristics

Plants slender, not rhizomatous; tussocks compact, 25–35 cm high; flowering culms 75–105 cm high. Leaves glabrous to hirsute; sheath similar to blade in width and colour, ciliate at least on outer margin, never woolly; ligule 0.5–1 mm long; blade 7–15 cm long. Panicles 7–17 cm long; branches 1.5–3.5 cm long. Pedicel 0.6–1.2 cm long. Glumes partly scaberulous, shortly awned; lower glume 8–10 mm long, with awn 1.5–2.5 mm long, glabrous; upper glume 10–14 mm long, with awn 1–3 mm long, sometimes sparsely hairy. Florets usually 5 or 6. Basal lemma c. 8–10 mm long, glabrous or sparsely hairy along midnerve; callus 1.8–2.5 mm long; awn 5–8 mm long. Palea 7–9 mm long, with keels scaberulous towards apex, ciliolate at apex. First empty lemma with body 4–6 mm long; median awn 8–9 mm long; lateral awns 5–6 mm long. Anthers about 3.5 mm long.

In the type locality, it is codominant with Eriachne on open margins of Acacia thickets on plateaux, andalso in semi-scalded patches, with stony shaly soil, associated with Micraira and scattered low shrubs.
