Characteristics

Plants forming hummocks 0.4 m high, 2 m wide, extremely resinous on culms, foliage and inflorescences, aromatic. Flowering culms 0.5–0.9 m high. Leaves: sheath glabrous with many broad nerves (no flat fan-shaped sheaths observed); orifice bearded with hairs to 10 mm long; blade strongly curled or curved or flexuose, folded, 21–45 cm long, 0.8–1.5 mm wide, pseudopetiolate, sparsely prickly along margins. Panicles linear, loose, 20–50 cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide, with 1 or 2 branches to 5.5 cm long near base, unbranched above; axis quadrangular, scabrous or smooth, with prominent glabrous pulvini. Spikelets linear, terete, (10–) 14–18 mm long, 3.5–5 (–12) mm wide, closely 5–13-flowered; pedicel 1–3 (–15) mm long; rachilla compressed. Glumes ±equal, oblong or lanceolate-elliptic, 5–6 mm long, entire or 2-lobed or dentate, obtuse or truncate, muticous, cartilaginous with hyaline margins and apex, rounded on back, 5 (–9)-nerved, glabrous. Callus broadly obtuse with a ring of resin-matted hairs. Basal lemma 6–8.5 mm long, indurated with cartilaginous margins, 9-nerved (in 3 groups of 3), hirsute on back; lobes triangular, flattened, more than half total lemma length; midlobe 3–5.5 mm long; lateral lobes 2.5–4 mm long. Palea lanceolate or oblong, 4–5 mm long, with 2 small and glabrous or ciliolate lobes, cartilaginous or indurated near base, hyaline or membranous in upper part, glabrous; keels narrowly winged. Anthers 2–2.5 mm long.
