Plants robust, forming dense hummocks, 1–2 m high, to c. 5 m wide, stoloniferous, not resinous. Flowering culms 1–3 m high. Leaves: sheath ±loose on culms, persistent, not auriculate, 4–5 mm wide, hirsute and/or ciliate on margins, or glabrous; orifice bearded with hairs 2–3 mm long or pubescent; blade straight or flexuose, often recurved, folded, 6–30 cm long, 0.8–1.5 mm wide, with pseudopetiole 5–10 mm long, scabrous along margins, closely nerved on lower surface and sometimes with numerous translucent dots. Panicles linear, dense, 30–40 cm long, 0.5–1.5 cm wide; axis quadrangular; branches 4–7 cm long, simple, closely appressed to axis except at anthesis. Spikelets contiguous to close together, narrowly oblong, 3–7.5 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, loosely or closely 3–11-flowered; pedicel 0.8–1.3 mm long. Glumes lanceolate-ovate or upper elliptic, scarious, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume 1.8–3 mm long, entire; upper glume 2–3.5 mm long, notched and aristulate from sinus (with a short stiff awnlet).
