Characteristics

Plants forming hummocks 0.6–0.9 m high, c. 0.6 m wide, without stolons or aerial roots, not resinous. Flowering culms procumbent, 1–1.3 m long, reddish brown. Leaves: sheath many-nerved, pilose to hirsute near margins; orifice with hairs 2–2.5 mm long; blade flexuose, folded, to 30 cm long, 0.6–0.7 mm wide, closely nerved, with thick flat pseudopetiole 3–6 mm long, scabrous along margins. Panicles linear, loose, 20–30 cm long, 1–1.5 cm wide; axis ribbed, quadrangular to flattened upwards; branches to 7.5 cm long, flat or triquetrous. Spikelets cuneate, 7–10 mm long excluding awns, 2.5–4 mm wide; pedicel usually 2.5–6 mm long; florets 5–7, closely overlapping; rachilla with internodes c. 1.3 mm long and deeply cupular apex. Glumes ±equal, lanceolate, 7–9 mm long, entire or lower glume notched, acuminate or aristulate, cartilaginous with thinner margins, 1 (–5)-nerved, glabrous. Callus 0.3 mm long, blunt, bearded except on tip and midnerve. Basal lemma: body 3.5–4 mm long, cartilaginous to indurated with membranous margins, with spreading hairs at base; lobes flat near base, recurved; midlobe (including awn) 5–6 mm long; lateral lobes (with awns) 3.5–5 mm long. Palea usually c. 4 mm long, obtuse, notched at apex, cartilaginous with scattered hairs, becoming hyaline near tip; keels narrowly winged. Anthers 1.6–2.3 mm long.
