Characteristics

Leaves usually narrowed into very short petioles which may be slightly connate at the base. Calyx gamosepalous, with 5 or 4 lobes (sepals), with 10 or 8 main nerves. Petals 5 or 4 narrowly or broadly spathuliform, longer or shorter than the calyx, white. Stamens 4–10. Ovary unilocular, with 3–5 free styles, alternating with the sepals when equal in number to them; ovules 1–9. Capsule septicidal, included in the persistent calyx, with 1–7 seeds, opening by 3–5 teeth or valves.. Low growing, procumbent or more or less erect or ascending herbs
