Sessile spikelet narrowly oblong; inferior glume 6–10 mm long, glabrous except for the spinulose to ciliolate keels, not muricate, acute to bidenticulate (very rarely biaristulate) at the apex.
Leaf sheaths commonly pubescent to pilose above; ligule usually short, 1–3(5) mm long, truncate, inconspicuous; leaf laminas 10–40 cm × 4–10 mm, fairly broad.
Inflorescence of (1)3–4(10) racemes each 15–30 cm long, subdigitate or borne upon a central axis 2–7(12) cm long; rhachis internodes and pedicels glabrous.
Pedicelled spikelet 2–7 mm long, with an awn 2–3.5(5) cm long.
Caespitose perennial; culms up to 200 cm high.
