Utricularia cymbantha Ex Oliv.

Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Lentibulariaceae > Utricularia

Characteristics

Very small, annual, suspended aquatic. Rhizoids absent. Stolons capillary, branched, up to 10 cm long or longer, c. 0.2 mm thick, glabrous. Leaves very numerous at internodes of 1-2 mm, forked from the base into two, equal or unequal, curved, capillary, apically minutely setulose segments, the segments either both 0.5-0.8 mm long or with one much longer, up to 2.5 mm. Traps numerous, in the angle between the leaf segments and also laterally near the apex of the longer segments, ovoid, 1-1.5 mm long, stalked, the mouth lateral with two dorsal, branched, setiform appendages and further ventral, shorter, simple setae, the internal glands 1-3-or rarely a few 4-armed, the arms mostly short, pyriform, apiculate, 2-4 times as long as wide, the arms of both the bifids and quadrifids widely divergent with an included angle of 80° to 90°; all the vegetative parts and the peduncle, pedicels and bract ± densely covered with minute sessile glands. Inflorescence erect, emergent, 0.4-1.5 cm long, arising at variable intervals along the stolons; peduncle filiform, terete, 0.2-0.3 mm thick. Scales absent. Bracts basifixed, narrowly ovate, c. 1 mm long, membranous, nerveless; bracteoles absent. Flower apparently always solitary; pedicels capillary, terete, up to 8 mm long, erect in flower, strongly decurved in fruit. Calyx lobes subequal, c. 1 mm long, membranous, nerveless, the upper lobe broadly ovate, the lower lobe circular, both with the apex rounded. Corolla 3-5 mm long, white or cream; upper lip transversely oblong, with apex rounded or emarginate; lower lip limb approximately circular or subreniform, concave when viewed from outside, the apex rounded, or emarginate; palate ill-defined; spur saccate, approximately hemispherical, the inner surface (and the central part of the lower lip limb) ± densely beset with minute rosette-shaped sessile glands. Filaments curved, c. 1 mm long, the anther thecae confluent. Ovary ovoid, ovules 3 or 4; style filiform, distinct; stigma lower lip elliptic with apex rounded or emarginate, ciliate, the upper lip ± obsolete. Capsule ovoid, c. 1.5 mm long, the wall membranous, apparently indehiscent. Seeds 2 or 3, lenticular, circular, c. 0.7 mm wide including a narrow, irregularly minutely denticulate wing, the testa cells irregular, small, ± isodiametric on the distal surface, elongate on the proximal surface, the anticlines ± straight, raised, thickened and somewhat irregularly rope-like, the periclinal walls tabular, microscopically rugose with distinct transverse ridges.
