Utricularia firmula Welw. ex Oliv.

Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Lentibulariaceae > Utricularia

Characteristics

Small annual, terrestrial. Rhizoids very numerous, capillary, simple, up to 2 cm long, 0.1-0.15 mm thick. Stolons numerous, capillary, branched, a few cm long, c. 0.2 mm thick. Leaves few to many, sparsely rosulate and on the stolons, long petiolate, the lamina obovate, up to 1 mm wide, 1-nerved; total length up to 2 cm. Traps very numerous on the rhizoids and leaf petioles, ovoid, stalked, 0.15-0.3 mm long, the mouth terminal with a rounded or truncate, dorsal appendage, the appendage inner surface with sessile glands and the distal margin fringed with 2-10 stipitate glands, the ventral lip of the mouth receding and with radiating rows of sessile glands. Inflorescence erect, solitary, simple or often branched, (2-)10-20(-38) cm long; peduncle terete, stiff, wiry, 0.5-1 mm thick, glabrous. Scales numerous, similar to the bracts. Bracts basifixed, reflexed, ovate, 1-1.5 mm long, with apex acute. Bracteoles erect, narrowly ovate, slightly longer than the bract. Flowers (1-)10-20(-50+), the raceme axis elongate, straight; pedicels erect, terete, 0.2-0.5 mm long. Calyx lobes subequal, c. 1.5 mm long, transversely elliptic, with apex emarginate or obscurely 2-3-denticulate, externally papillose, the margins strongly involute. Corolla 4-6 mm long, yellow and an orange spot at the base of the lower lip; upper lip constricted below the middle, the inferior part transversely oblong, the superior part broadly ovate, with apex emarginate; lower lip limb ± transversely elliptic, the base with a bilobed swelling, the apex ± distinctly but shortly 3-lobed; palate margin papillose; spur subulate or narrowly cylindrical from a conical base, with apex acute, straight or slightly curved, 2.5-3.5 times as long as the limb. Filaments slightly curved, c. 0.8 mm long, the anther thecae subdistinct. Ovary ovoid; style very short; stigma lower lip semicircular, the upper lip very much smaller, deltoid or ligulate. Capsule globose, c. 1.5 mm long, usually enclosed in the persistent corolla, the wall firm in texture, dehiscing by longitudinal, dorsal and ventral, marginally thickened slits. Seeds obovoid-prismatic, c. 0.2 mm long. Flowering mostly towards the end of the wet season.
