Utricularia prehensilis E.Mey.

Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Lentibulariaceae > Utricularia

Characteristics

Small to medium sized, probably perennial, terrestrial. Rhizoids numerous, filiform, a few mm long, c. 0.2 mm thick, bearing short papillose branches. Stolons rather few, filiform, branched, up to 5 cm long, 0.3-0.5 mm thick, the internodes 2-8 mm long. Leaves often numerous, usually branch opposed at the stolon nodes, petiolate, the lamina linear, with apex rounded, up to 3 mm wide, many nerved; total length up to 10 cm. Traps numerous, on the rhizoids, stolons and leaves, globose, stalked, glandular, 0.6-1.5 mm long, the mouth basal, with 2 subulate dorsal appendages and a single, variable, laterally compressed, ventral appendage at the distal end of the stalk. Inflorescence erect or twining, solitary, simple, 3-35 cm long; peduncle terete, glabrous, up to 1 mm thick. Scales few, similar to the bracts. Bracts basifixed, ovate-deltoid, with apex acute or shortly acuminate, 1.5-2 mm long, several nerved. Bracteoles basifixed, linear, with apex acute, slightly curved, shorter than the bract, 1-nerved. Flowers 1-8, the raceme axis elongate; pedicels erect, filiform, narrowly winged, 0.3-1.8 cm long. Calyx lobes slightly to distinctly unequal, ovate to broadly ovate, up to 5 mm long at anthesis and up to 1 cm long in fruit, the upper lobe with apex obtuse or subacute, the lower lobe smaller, with apex obtuse, truncate or shortly bifid. Corolla yellow, 0.8-2 cm long; upper lip narrowly oblong to spathulate with apex rounded, truncate or emarginate; lower lip limb broadly obovate, the base conspicuously swollen, usually longitudinally 4-ridged, the apex rounded, entire, shortly bifid or obscurely 4-crenate; palate with distal margin conspicuously ciliate; spur subulate, with apex acute, straight or slightly curved, as long as or longer than and widely divergent from the lower lip. Filaments curved, c. 1.5 mm long, the anther thecae subdistinct. Ovary ovoid, dorsiventrally compressed; style short; stigma lower lip semicircular, the upper lip smaller, truncate, rounded or obtusely deltoid. Capsule ovoid, dorsiventrally compressed, up to 5 mm long, the wall thin and membranous, dehiscing by a single, ventral, longitudinal, marginally thickened slit. Seeds ovoid, 0.6-0.8 mm long, appearing distinctly rugose at low magnification, the testa cells elongate with the anticlinal boundaries raised, sinuate, smooth, the periclinal walls concave, smooth. Mostly flowering in the wet season but in permanently wet habitats more or less throughout the year.
