Xanthophyllum octandrum Domin

Tree to 30 m high. Leaves: lamina ovate to elliptic, 6–22 cm long, obtuse to shortly acuminate, slightly discolorous; foliar glands 2–6, small, towards base of lamina. Racemes 4–20 cm long; pedicels 4–5 mm long. Flowers strongly zygomorphic, fragrant. Sepals 2–4 mm long. Petals narrowly obovate, 4–9 mm long, white to cream; keel pilose outside. Stamens c. 5 mm long. Ovary ± globose, c. 2 mm diam., white-pilose; gynophore c. 1 mm long; style c. 2.5 mm long; stigma shortly 2-lobed. Fruit ± globose, 13–18 mm diam., orange; fruiting pedicel 5–7 mm long. Seeds ± globose, c. 15 mm diam., black.

 Grows in coastal or montane rainforests to an altitude of 1000 m on a variety of soils, commonly on those derived from granites.
