Spikelets narrowly lanceolate, 15–28 mm. long, brown, the lower glume hirsute with white hairs from dark brown tubercles; lower glume as long as the spikelet, long attenuate to a filiform tip; upper glume 4/5 as long as the spikelet; upper lemma 8–10 mm. long, bearing a row of 6–8 tufts of hair across the back, otherwise glabrous, acutely bilobed, the lobes often attenuate into setae 1–2 mm. long; central awn 15–25 mm. long; callus broadly oblong or broader than long; palea-keels narrowly winged..
