Characteristics

Erect perennials. Leaf-blades linear, flat, not crinkled on one margin; ligule a ciliate fringe. Inflorescence a panicle, ± contracted, the spikelets ternate with connate pedicels; peduncles villous, developing a fragile hook-like flexure at maturity, the triads falling entire. Spikelets large, brown, villous with tubercle-based hairs, disarticulating beneath each floret, the lower floret ♂; glumes narrowly lanceolate, chartaceous to coriaceous, 3-nerved, ± persistent; lower lemma 5-nerved, 2/3–3/4 as long as the spikelet; upper lemma oblong-elliptic, thinly coriaceous, variously hairy, 5–9-nerved, bilobed, the lobes muticous or aristulate, with a persistent geniculate awn from the sinus; callus short, broadly rounded; stamens 3. Caryopsis linear, the hilum linear.
