Spikelets 50-90 mm long (including awns). Inflorescence narrow, 150-300 mm long, dense, spikelike, branches closely appressed to main axis, sometimes interrupted towards base; lower glume up to two-thirds the length of the upper, awned; lemma articulation between apex of lemma and base of column; column present; awns 3, laterals well developed; callus 1.5-3.0 mm long, tip naked, acuminate, pungent.
