Annual or perennial shrubs or herbs. Leaves alternate, sessile or shortly petiolate, simple, dentate to pinnatifid, usually hairy. Capitula heterogamous, disciform, solitary or in lax corymbs or panicles; phyllaries numerous, the outermost shortest, chartaceous, all pubescent on the abaxial surface, with scarious margins; receptacle honeycombed, epaleate. Florets usually yellow, but purple or mauve in ours; outer florets female, filiform, in several rows, inner florets with 4–5 lobes; anthers tailed. Achenes narrowly oblong, ribbed, hairy; pappus uniseriate, of numerous barbellate bristles
