Canscora Lam.

Genus

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Gentianaceae

Characteristics

Annual, erect or straggling herbs. Stem dichotomously branched or decussate, 4-ridged, ridges smooth or winged. Leaves sessile, opposite, decurrent on stem ridges or wings, or more or less connate. Inflorescences terminal dichasial cymes, sometimes diffuse; bracts subulate, foliaceous or perfoliate. Flowers usually 4-merous. Calyx tube conspicuous; lobes short. Corolla tube distinct; lobes sometimes unequal, ± irregular, imbricate. Stamens inserted into corolla tube at different levels, 1–2(–3) sterile; filaments unequal; fertile anthers on the longer filaments. Ovary unilocular; style filiform, stigma bilobed, hemispheric, revolute, papillose. Capsule oblong, bivalved, dehiscing septicidally. Seeds numerous, surface ± reticulate-pitted.
More
Annual, glabrous herbs. Flowers 4-merous. Calyx tube narrow, much longer than lobes; lobes narrowly lanceolate. Corolla salverform; tube cylindrical; lobes slightly unequal, spreading; plicae absent. Stamens 4, 1 longer than the other 3; filaments adnate for most of their length to corolla tube; anthers basifixed, scarcely twisted after anthesis, dehiscence longitudinal. Nectaries absent. Ovary cylindrical, abruptly contracted at apex; ovules numerous; style filiform, caducous; stigmas 2, broad, densely papillose; gynophore absent. Capsule cylindrical, included in persistent perianth, dehiscing longitudinally to base. Seeds numerous.
Annuals or perennials. Leaves opposite, sessile, petiolate, or perfoliate. Cymes pseudodichotomous or complex. Flowers 4 or 5merous. Calyx tubular. Corolla usually tubular, salverform, or campanulate. Stamens inserted at apical part of corolla tube, 1 or 2 (or 3) with fertile anthers, 2 or 3 with sterile nonfunctional anthers. Ovary 1locular. Stigma lobes oblong or capitate. Capsules 2valved, many seeded. Seeds suborbicular, compressed; seed coat reticulate.
Leaves sessile, sometimes connate and decurrent on a ridge or narrowly winged; lamina lanceolate, elliptic, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 3–5-nerved.
Stamens 4, inserted at different levels in the corolla tube, often some sterile; filaments short; anthers ovoid or ellipsoid not twisted.
Corolla regular or rarely irregular; tube cylindric, with 4 equal or unequal (2 large and 2 short) lobes, much shorter than the tube.
Ovary ellipsoid or cylindric, unilocular; ovules numerous; style filiform; stigma bilobed.
Flowers 4-merous, in terminal or axillary, lax cymes, sometimes, solitary.
Stems erect, much branched, 4-ridged or narrowly 4-winged, glabrous.
Calyx tube terete or winged; lobes much shorter than the tube.
Seeds numerous; testa minutely faveolate.
Capsule cylindrical, bivalved.
