Characteristics

Annual or perennial herbs with a deep-seated corm; corm with a long thin neck and matted fibrous tunics. Leaves basal, linear to ovate-acuminate, sheathing at base. Inflorescence a bracteate, simple or branched raceme. Flowers bisexual, regular or zygomorphic, pedicellate. Perianth segments 6, free or ± connate at base, spreading to reflexed. Stamens 6, equal or dimorphic; filaments shorter than anthers; anthers basifixed, opening by apical pores. Style simple; stigma minutely 3-lobed; ovary half-inferior, 3-locular; ovules numerous per locule; placentation axile. Fruit a loculicidal capsule. Seeds ovoid, black, shiny.
