Characteristics

More or less glabrous, unarmed, evergreen trees or shrubs. Flowers hermaphrodite, sessile in axillary or terminal panicles. Calyx ovoid, irregularly 3–4(–5)-toothed, sometimes approximately bilobed. Petals 4(–5), free, elliptic, oblong or linear-oblong, sometimes ± spathulate, imbricate. Stamens 4(–5), hypogynous; filaments dilated basally, shortly connate into a tube, free and filiform above; anthers ovate. Disk consisting of 4 glands alternating with the stamens, each at the base of a petal and ± attached to it. Ovary 1-locular; style short; stigma obtuse or truncate; ovules 1–2, erect. Fruit a subglobose or ellipsoidal drupe; only 1 of the ovules appears to develop into a seed in 2-ovuled ovaries.
