Characteristics

Caespitose perennials. Culms unbranched. Leaves: ligule firmly membranous, hairy or glabrous; blade flat or involute. Inflorescence open or contracted. Glumes longer than lemma, 3–7-nerved. Callus short, blunt, with a tuft of hairs. Lemma either much longer than wide or ±ovoid, laterally compressed, with margins usually not completely enclosing palea, unlobed, firm, often longitudinally striate, 3-nerved, usually hairy or papillose; terminal awn caducous, usually geniculate, sometimes asymmetric. Palea longer than lemma, with tip usually exposed and free from lemma, thickened, especially where exposed, grooved along midline, 5-nerved. Lodicules 2.
