Characteristics

Shrubs or small trees, rarely lianas, with all parts glabrous except inside the corolla tube; white latex present in all parts. Leaves opposite or in whorls of 3–5. Inflorescence predominantly axillary, sometimes terminal at the same time, fasciculate, ramiflorous, 1–40-flowered, sessile; bracts very small, scale-like; pedicels 1–2 mm long. Flowers very fragrant. Sepals without colleters. Corolla pure white to yellow; tube greenish in bud; lobes overlapping to the left in bud, always shorter than the tube. Ovary of 2–5 separate carpels, united at the extreme base by a disk-like thickening; pistil head ellipsoid or oblong. Fruit yellow to bright orange, smooth to rugose, of 2–5 separate mericarps (2 in our area), with a rounded to hooked apex. Seeds brown, sometimes angular; embryo straight, spatulate.
