Characteristics

Tufted, rhizomatous, herbaceous perennials. Roots fibrous. Aerial stems condensed, leafy. Leaves linear; sheath closed at apex. Inflorescence terminal, cymose, bracteate. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, pedicellate, erect. Perianth segments 6, free, petaloid, subequal, spreading or recurved, marcescent. Stamens 6, hypogynous, shorter than perianth; filaments ±fusiform, papillose-barbellate from near base to near apex, ± incurving; anthers slender, ± tapered upwards, dehiscing longitudinally by slits, introrse, recurved or coiled after dehiscence. Ovary superior, 3-locular, ± 3-lobed distally; ovules few to many per locule; placentation axile; style filiform; stigma minute, papillose. Fruit a loculicidal capsule, dark brown or black at maturity. Seeds oblong, transversely biconvex, dark brown to black, shiny.
