Characteristics

Herbs or shrubs with 1-few erect stems. Leaves tapering towards base, entire, densely tomentose or villous. Inflorescence loose or spike-like, often a branched thyrse on a terminal scape, bracteolate; pedicel articulate. Sepals adnate to top of ovary. Corolla yellow, sometimes brownish outside; lobes unequal; wings ±equal. Stamens free, epigynous. Ovary 1-locular, with reddish or golden multicellular hairs between 3 of the sepaline ribs; ovule solitary; style simple; indusium horizontal, oblong, ±grooved, with short white bristles on lips. Fruit a compressed, hairy nut surmounted by sepals. Seeds flat, ±distinctly rimmed, with hard testa; wing obsolete. Embryo spathulate.
