Inflorescences solitary or in series usually interspersed with foliage leaves; peduncle c. as long as petioles; spathe narrowly to broadly campanulate, conspicuous, not or hardly constricted; spadix shorter than spathe; female zone of naked pistils, or these interspersed with staminodes; male zone a mass of stamens (male flowers not recognisable as such); stamens truncate; appendix absent. Fruit protected by persistent spathe or spathe base, a green to yellow fleshy berry containing 1–several leathery seeds.
