Characteristics

Shrubs or trees, evergreen, perennial, dioecious; stems with conspicuous brown or red latex. Indumentum of simple trichomes, not glandular, stinging hairs absent. Stipules obsolete. Leaves alternate, petiolate, elobate, entire, penninerved, basilaminar glands present. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, racemose, solitary, unisexual, with flowers in bracteate clusters. Male flowers pedicellate; calyx lobes 3–6, cupuliform, connate at base and unequal; petals 4–6, imbricate, free; disc present; stamens 18–40, filaments connate for part of length and attached to a slightly raised receptacle; anthers dorsifixed, bilobate, thecae oblong and longitudinally dehiscent; pistillodes absent. Female flowers pedicellate; calyx lobes 2–6, cupuliform, connate at base and unequal; petals 4–6, imbricate, free; disc present; ovary 2–5-locular [cf. subfam. description-Editor], ovules uniloculate; styles shortly connate at base, deeply bifid. Fruit drupaceous, tri-to pentalobate; sarcocarp fleshy, surface smooth; endocarp woody. Seeds ellipsoid; testa membranous; albumen fleshy; ecarunculate; cotyledons broad, flat.
