Perennial or annual herbs, woolly in most parts; stems weak. Leaves alternate, mostly narrow, margins flat, eglandular. Capitula terminal or in terminal racemes, disciform, few together, sometimes surrounded by a whorl of leaves; stalks of individual capitula usually absent; phyllaries in few series, brownish, flat, stereome undivided or with a few streaks, distal part of lamina (at least in inner series) opaque or pellucid; receptacle epaleate. Outer florets yellow or cream, female; inner florets hermaphrodite, fewer than the outer, yellow (rarely mauve), lobes hairy, style branches truncate. More
Heads disciform, yellow or whitish, the numerous outer fls pistillate, with tubular-filiform cor about equaling the pappus, the few inner ones coarser and perfect; invol ovoid or campanulate, its bracts ± imbricate, scarious at least at the tip; receptacle flat to subconic, naked; anthers caudate; style-branches slender, minutely papillate outside, slightly flattened, with ventromarginal stigmatic lines extending to the truncate or slightly expanded tip; achenes small, terete or slightly compressed, nerveless; pappus of capillary bristles, these sometimes thickened at the summit, sometimes connate at the base; woolly herbs with alternate, entire lvs. (Gamochaeta) 100+, cosmop.
Capitula small, solitary, clustered or corymbose, heterogamous; phyll. imbricate, in several series; receptacle plane to alveolate. Outer florets pistillate, ∞, filiform, minutely toothed; inner perfect, fewer, tubular. Anther-cells produced at base into filiform tails; style-arms of disk-florets nearly terete, truncate to capitate. Achenes not ribbed. Pappus-hairs in one series, caducous. Annual to perennial herbs with alt., entire lvs. Genus of cosmopolitan distribution, with c. 150 spp. Of the N.Z. spp. 1 is widespread elsewhere, 3 occur in Australia, the others are endemic.
Herbs, rarely woody at base. Lvs alternate, simple, entire. Capitula solitary or in small to large clusters; clusters usually capitate or forming spikes, rarely forming panicles. Involucral bracts in 2-several rows, imbricate, membranous, sometimes with coloured but not radiating lamina. Receptacle ± flat; scales 0. Outer florets ♀, filiform, usually many. Inner florets ☿, tubular, few. Achenes all similar, ± terete, not angled or ribbed; pappus hairs in 1 row, narrow at apex.
