Selliguea Bory

Genus

Pteridophytes > Polypodiales > Polypodiaceae > Drynarioideae

Characteristics

Epiphytic, epilithic or terrestrial, small to medium-sized ferns. Rhizome creeping, short to long-trailing, slightly to strongly glaucous, densely set with persistent or oc-casionally deciduous scales, in cross section with 0-many sclerenchyma strands. Rhizome scales basifixed, pseudopeltate to peltate, appressed to squarrose. Fronds monomorphic or dimorphic, more or less distinctly differentiated in stipe and lamina. Lamina simple, pinnatifid to pinnate, the fertile parts usually narrowed, texture thin-to thick-leathery, sparsely set with inconspicuous short glandular hairs on both sides, upper surface often with hydathodes; margin often with a thickened, cartilaginous border, rarely with a flat, wide, cartilaginous border, with or without notches. Venation: at least one row of closed areoles present, usually with excurrent and recurrent included free veinlets, free veinlets rarely only excurrent, or absent; margin with few to many excurrent free veinlets. Anatomy: stomata on abaxial surface only, polo-and copolocytic, a distinct hypodermis present on adaxial side, frequently on abaxial side as well. Sori 1-5 mm wide in smallest diameter, round or elongated, superficial to deeply sunken in pits forming distinct pustules on the adaxial surface, 1 or 2 (rarely more) in each areole, in one to many rows between midrib and margin, in the latter case forming distinct single or double rows between the adjacent veins, sometimes forming many transverse coenosori, sometimes in single longitudinal coenosori. Sporangia stalked, glabrous, intermixed with highly variable numbers of uniseriate paraphyses. Spores brown, monolete, bilateral, smooth to colliculate, dotted with spines or globules in varying densities.
More
Rhizome slender, woody, densely scaly; scales reddish brown, brown, dark brown, or nearly black, rarely whitish, opaque, ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate, margin entire, toothed, or ciliate, apex attenuate or setaceous. Fronds remote, articulate to rhizome, monomorphic or dimorphic with longer and narrower fertile fronds. Stipe usually glabrous, rarely pubescent, scaly at base. Lamina simple, hastately 3-lobed, palmately or pinnately divided, sometimes pinnatisect with adnate pinnae, herbaceous or leathery, glabrous or pubescent, rarely scaly on abaxial side. Lobes usually lanceolate, margin distinctly cartilaginous, entire, notched, or serrate, apex acuminate or obtuse. Lateral veins (in lamina or segments) distinct; veinlets anastomosing to form areoles with included free veinlets. Sori orbicular, in 1 row on either side of costa, less often linear or in many rows, usually superficial, rarely sunken on abaxial surface and raised on adaxial surface. Sporangia with long stalk, annulus with 14 hardened cells. Spores brown, ellipsoid, surface tuberculate or verrucate. x = 12, n = 36, 37.
Main lateral veins distinct; scales not clathrate
