Characteristics

Plants tufted, spreading, prostrate or proliferous-stoloniferous. Stems simple or divided, wiry. Leaves linear, flat or terete, glabrous, hirsute or with bristles. Inflorescence scapose, capitate or cymose, 1-to many-flowered, spherical or one-sided; flowers sessile or shortly pedicellate, erect or spreading, tomentose with plumose hairs; hairs yellow, cream, orange or purple. Perianth usually actinomorphic, tubular in lower half; lobes equal, erect to spreading. Stamens 6, inserted near top of tube, uni-or biseriate; anthers basifixed or partly free, introrse; connective decurrent, usually inappendiculate. Ovary half-inferior, uniformly adnate to perianth; ovules few to many per locule; style usually straight; stigma minutely 3-lobed. Capsule with persistent perianth.
