Shrubs or trees with erect or prostrate, rarely branched, trunks clothed with woody leaf bases. Leaves, oblong to linear; leaflets linear-lanceolate to ovate or oblong-lanceolate, with many parallel nerves, spine tipped and more or less spiny toothed, rarely entire, the lowermost often reduced to spines, straight in the bud. Male cones stalked, 1–several, of closely imbricate scales with subpeltate apex (bulla) and a limb closely covered below with ellipsoid pollen sacs. Female cones nearly sessile; cone-scales with a peltate to subreniform head (bulla), variously faceted and sculptured, bearing a large inverted ovule on either side of the slender quadrangular stalk. Seeds ellipsoid or oblong, often angular by compression.
