Flowers small to medium-sized; calyx 5-lobed, the lobes equal, relatively small, bearing many squamellae;-corolla salverform, without appendages, the tube straight, the limb 5-lobed, sin-istrorsely convolute; stamens 5, included or ? exserted, attached midway or higher on the corolla tube, the anthers free and not agglutinated to the stigma, without an enlarged connective; gynoecium 2-carpellate, apocarpous, the ovary superior, the ovules numerous, the nectary shallow or absent, the style 1, the stigma umbraculiform below and capitate or pentagonal above. Fruit apocarpous, of 2 follicles, ? large and heavy; seeds many, naked, embedded in a fleshy aril.
Shrubs or small trees, latex white. Stems repeatedly dichotomously branched. Leaves opposite; adaxial surface of petiole often with a basal semicircular or semiamplexicaul ocrea. Cymes corymbose or umbellate, at branch forks, many or rarely 1-flowered. Calyx divided halfway down or deeper, with few to many basal glands inside. Corolla salverform, widened at or near middle, lobes sharply overlapping to left [or right]. Stamens inserted in widened part of corolla tube; filaments short or almost none; anthers oblong or narrowly triangular, free from pistil head, base sagittate or deeply cordate and not spurred; disc absent. Ovaries 2, free; ovules numerous. Style filiform; pistil head with a subglobose or lampshade-shaped basal part and stigmoid, 2-cleft apical part. Follicles 2, divaricate. Seeds with a red or orange fleshy aril; coma absent.
Perennial shrubs or small trees, evergreen; latex white. Stems without spines. Leaves petiolate, opposite; lamina entire or rarely sinuate, herbaceous to coriaceous, glabrous or with simple basifixed hairs; colleters absent. Inflorescences axillary, cymose, pedunculate. Flowers scented, pedicellate. Calyx with colleters. Corolla ±salverform; tube cylindrical, with internal indumentum, without scales; lobes sinistrorse in bud. Corolline corona absent. Stamens included, inserted in upper part of tube; anthers lanceolate to oblong, not adherent to style-head. Disc absent. Style-head subglobose to cylindrical. Fruit a follicle, apocarpous, dehiscent along adaxial suture. Seeds 1–many, oblong, unwinged, ecomose.
