Arborescent or shrubby perennials, with leptomorph rhizomes. Culms woody and persistent, flattened and grooved on branch-bearing side; with 2 primary branches per mid-culm node (but rebranching). Leaves: ligule an unfringed or fringed membrane; blade rolled in bud, pseudopetiolate, cross-veined. Inflorescences definite, compound paniculate consisting of spicate 1-spikeleted branchlets aggregated into spatheate clusters, without pseudospikelets. Spikelets laterally compressed to not noticeably compressed, disarticulating above glumes and between florets, with 1–4 florets and all bisexual. Glumes 1–3 (lateral spikelets with an outer bract at base), awnless, many-nerved. Lemma awnless or mucronate, keeled or not, many-nerved; palea several-nerved; stamens 3; ovary with conspicuous apical appendage, glabrous. Hilum long-linear.
