Characteristics

Small to medium-sized epiphytes or clumping lithophytes with spreading, smooth roots. Stems generally short, fibrous, covered with persistent leaf bases, either sparsely branched or new growths produced freely from base. Leaves from relatively small, stiff and spreading to large, upright and leathery. Racemes short to long, few-flowered to multiflowered. Flowers resupinate, narrow to rounded, often colourful. Sepals and petals more or less equal in size and of similar shape. Labellum hinged to apex of column foot. Labellum lamina 3-lobed; lateral lobes large, erect; midlobe short; basal spur well-developed or obscure, fleshy or not. Callus grooved or finger-like. Column short with basal foot. Pollinia 4 in 2 unequal pairs, hard, waxy, orange, attached via narrow stipe to viscidium.
