Leaves cauline and in basal rosette (sometimes soon deciduous); the cauline ones linear, linear-lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate to ovate-cordate, sometimes much reduced, sessile, or amplexicaul, rarely cuneate to a petiole-like base.
Ovary globose to cylindric-globose, unilocular; ovules numerous; style simple, terete usually becoming hooked at the apex; stigma subcapitate or bilobed.
Corolla tube campanulate or cylindric; lobes 5, spreading, usually as long as or longer than the tube, without nectaries.
Stamens 5, inserted at the throat of the corolla; filaments without scales at the base; anthers straight or twisted.
Calyx 5-lobed, sometimes winged on the keel and decurrent on the tube, without basal glands.
Stems erect, simple or branched at the apex or straggling, rarely radicant.
Flowers 5-merous in a lax, few-many-flowered cyme, sometimes solitary.
Annual or perennial herbs, rarely suffrutescent.
Capsule septicidally bivalved, rarely baccate.
Seeds numerous, subglobose; testa faveolate.
