Characteristics

Annual or perennial herb, suffrutescent or herbaceous. Stem simple or branched. Leaves sometimes in basal rosette (often soon deciduous); cauline leaves sometimes reduced. Inflorescences in many-to few-flowered cymes, rarely flowers solitary. Flowers 5-merous, showy. Calyx with short tube; lobes without basal glands, sometimes winged at the keel. Corolla tube cylindrical, slightly widened at the throat; lobes usually as long as, or longer than the tube. Filaments inserted into the corolla tube, without scale at the base; anthers straight or twisted. Ovary unilocular; ovules numerous; style usually hooked at apex; stigma subcapitate or bilobed. Capsule bivalved. Seeds numerous.
